The Bellefontaine Neighbors Police Department uses a system to aid residents in identifying and marking personal property. The system uses a marker creating invisible marks that can only be seen under ultraviolet fluorescent lighting. The marking system kit is available for loan at the Bellefontaine Neighbors Police Department. It can be loaned for 48 hours and requires a valid Missouri Drivers License or Missouri Identification card to borrow the kit. There are three kits available, each contain 1 invisible ink marker and UV flashlight. The flashlight is used for the resident to verify that their property is marked correctly.
All residents, business owners, and real estate owners are encouraged to participate by utilizing one of the designated markers for marking their items with the home / or business address, their initials, and or date of birth. Special notation to location of marking can be recorded on a Personal Property Identification Record form that will be available at the time of system loan (see copy below).
The system was originally developed primarily for use on copper piping and it can also be used on many other items such as bicycles, golf clubs, electronic components, TV's, game systems, and most other household items.
This system will make it easier to identify the owner of property so that the property gets returned to the owner in a timely fashion. It will also prevent thieves from scraping or pawning stolen items as these businesses are utilizing this system prior to pawning and accepting scrap.
