In 2006, the Bellefontaine Neighbors Police Department began the process of law enforcement professional standards certification. This process requires the police department to take extraordinary steps to demonstrate its pride and professionalism by achieving a body of critical law enforcement standards and operating in such accordance to promote professionalism and quality law enforcement services to its community. The certification process is a revolving 3-year cycle to which at the end of each period an external professional audit is conducted to ensure compliance to the prescribed professional standards. On December 18, 2008, the Bellefontaine Neighbors Police Department was recognized as the 1st law enforcement agency in the State of Missouri to be certified with the Missouri Police Chiefs Charitable Foundation's Law Enforcement Professional Standards Certification program.
